FIFA's Infantino wants more African qualifying spots at World Cups

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said he wants at least two more places for African teams if his World Cup expansion plan takes place.

Infantino has already said he wants to see the World Cup increase from 32 teams to 40, with the expansion planned to take place after the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

African nations currently have five qualification spots in the 32-team format, but Infantino wants that increased to at least seven if his plan goes ahead.

"I believe for the World Cup 2026 -- because the 2018 and 2022 finals are already decided -- there should be 40 teams, and out of the eight more there should be at least two slots for African teams," he said during a visit to Nigeria.

"This is what I declared during my campaign and as you know I'm not a dictator but a democratically elected FIFA president, so I have to speak to everyone and listen to everyone as well."

Infantino told reporters in Uruguay in March that South America, which currently has four automatic berths and a potential fifth via an intercontinental playoff, would get five fixed places and that the playoff could provide the possibility of a sixth.
