Robert Lewandowski misses Poland friendlies to rest injured thigh

MUNICH -- Robert Lewandowski will sit out Poland's friendlies against Uruguay and Mexico to rest a thigh injury.

Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski, 29, suffered the injury against RB Leipzig on Oct. 28 and was substituted at half-time, missing last Tuesday's Champions League win over Celtic.

However, the Poland captain played the full 90 minutes against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend, scoring against his former club.

Lewandowski has said he feels his injury problem may be linked to his heavy workload at Bayern because of the club's lack of a back-up striker.

"I had a minor injury. At the same time, injuries to other players who could not play at all meant I did not have an opportunity to rest or play for a shorter time," he told Reuters.

"Sometimes even playing 20-30 minutes less in a game or just missing a game means everything comes back to normality.

"Maybe my injury was due to the fact that there was no time to rest."

Poland face Uruguay in Warsaw on Friday, playing Mexico in Gdansk three days later.
