Carlo Ancelotti delighted with Bayern Munich response as Leverkusen beaten

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his side's response as they bounced back from two straight defeats to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Thiago nodded the German champions ahead on the half hour before Turkey midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu equalised for the visitors five minutes later.

Mats Hummels headed his first goal for the club from a Joshua Kimmich corner on 56 minutes to seal the Bavarians' first success in four games.

"It's an important win," Ancelotti told Sky Deutschland. "We needed a reaction as the last two games weren't good.

"I'm happy with the result. There are moments in the season when it's more important to win than to play really well.

"We played well in parts of the game, but we suffered at the end too as it was really important."

However, the Italian said he had concerned about his side's defending, adding: "Unfortunately, the last few games we are always conceding goals, compared to the start of the season when we hardly conceded any.

"That's one of the areas where we have to improve."

The win moved Bayern back to within three points of Leipzig, and Ancelotti was quick to praise the surprise leaders.

"Congratulations to Leipzig, who are having a fantastic season," he said.

"Of course, every team wants to be at the top of the table. But the most important thing is to be top at the end of the season, and that remains our goal."
