Pep Guardiola established Bayern Munich internationally - Uli Hoeness

Pep Guardiola transformed Bayern Munich into "a global player" over the course of his three-year tenure, according to former club president Uli Hoeness.

Guardiola oversaw a penalty shootout victory over Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Pokal final on Saturday as he won Germany's domestic cup competition for a second time, in addition to his three successive Bundesliga titles.

The former Barcelona boss did not enjoy the same success in the Champions League, leading the club to the semifinals three years in succession, but Hoeness has no doubt that the coach was a success in Munich.

Speaking during Bayern's Double celebrations on Sunday, Hoeness, who helped secure Guardiola's services in 2013, told reporters: "Pep has helped FC Bayern to become an international brand.

"We've always been a fantastic football club with huge successes, but the fact that Pep Guardiola has worked here has given FC Bayern an international colour.

"We always wanted to be a global player, and with Pep Guardiola working at Sabener Strasse [Bayern's training facilities] FC Bayern has once and for all turned into a global player."

Guardiola, who took over after Jupp Heynckes' Treble in 2013, also won the Club World Cup and the European Supercup at Bayern, and it was during the Catalan's tenure that the Bavarians expanded their brand into the United States as well as China.

He helped Bayern to claim a record fourth successive league title this season as Bayern firmly asserted themselves as Germany's elite club.

Guardiola decided against prolonging his Bayern contract in favour of a switch to the Premier League with Manchester City, but Hoeness said: "I don't think he'll experience anything like that in England."

Hoeness played a major role in signing Guardiola during the coach's one-year sabbatical in New York after leaving Barca.

When Guardiola won the first of his three Bundesliga titles in spring 2014, he dedicated the championship to the outgoing president, who was given a prison sentence for tax evasion only days before Bayern secured the title at Hertha Berlin.

Earlier this year, Hoeness was released from prison and has since returned to the spotlight, although he currently has no official function at Bayern.

Guardiola was also praised by Bayern youngster Joshua Kimmich, who has been given the chance to establish himself in the first team after joining from Stuttgart last summer.

"I am just very thankful that he's thrown me in time and time again. Not many coaches have balls like Pep," Kimmich said. "He played me at centre-back again and again. I hope that I was able to pay back the trust."

The 21-year-old has been called up to Germany's preliminary Euro 2016 squad after making 23 Bundesliga appearances, and Kimmich said: "It's a fact that Guardiola is a special coach for me.

"I don't think a lot of other coaches would have supported me like that. Thanks to him, I am part of the national team now."
