Bayer Leverkusen miss fifth penalty of season in Monaco win

Bayer Leverkusen's failed to convert a penalty for the fifth time this season in their 3-0 Champions League victory over Monaco on Wednesday.

The Bundesliga side have not yet successfully converted a penalty this season and now have missed 12 of their last 20 attempts excluding shootouts after Wendell hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute, although the ball did deflect back into the goal off goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez had missed two of the club's previous four penalties this season, while midfielders Charles Aranguiz and Hakan Calhanoglu have also failed to convert.

Brazilian defender Wendell took responsibility against Monaco, who had already won Group E, but relied on the deflection from De Sanctis to extend their advantage to 3-0.

"He's actually a rather good penalty taker," Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt, who had an excellent match and was on target for Bayer, said. "That's why I thought he'd be able to finish it without the help of the keeper."

Leverkusen also exited the DFB Pokal on penalties against lower-league side Sportfreunde Lotte.

"Maybe it was good that the ball landed in the back of the net in the end," Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said, and midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger hoped that the own goal would boost Bayer's confidence from the spot.

Leverkusen finished second in Group E with four draws and two wins, remaining undefeated during the group stage of Champions League for the first time in their history.
