Barcelona's Javier Mascherano: I get unfairly criticised when we struggle

Javier Mascherano complained that he is all too often blamed when Barcelona struggle after making his 300th appearance for the club in Tuesday's 4-0 Champions League win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Mascherano, 32, was criticised after the 1-1 La Liga draw against Real Madrid at the weekend for a clumsy challenge on Lucas Vazquez -- which was not given as a penalty -- and for slipping over and losing Sergio Ramos, who headed in the equalising goal in the 90th minute.

Against Gladbach there was also a penalty appeal against the Argentina international which was not given, albeit with Barca already comfortably in the lead at that point in the second half.

"I haven't given away too many," Mascherano said when asked by Antena3 if he concedes too many penalties. "I think some of them I have given away, but not others.

"According to the geniuses that commentate on television, though, I give them all away. I commit a lot of errors and I accept that -- I'm not perfect -- but it's easy to comment with slow-motion replays and a thousand angles."

Mascherano completed a triple century of appearances for the Blaugrana against Gladbach, an achievement he is proud of.

"It's not easy to reach that amount of games," he said to TV3. "There's a lot of difficulty in being [at Barca] for so long and playing so many matches. I'm really happy to have been here for so long, but you have to look forward and want to achieve even more.

"I never imagined I'd win [17 titles]. It would be a lie to say that when I joined I imagined all this would happen. Of course it's a club with aspirations of winning everything, but you need some fortune as well."

Barca did not need much fortune to beat Gladbach on Tuesday. Arda Turan scored a hat trick and Lionel Messi was also on target in the 4-0 win, but it was Andres Iniesta who once again caught the eye.

The midfielder's return from an injury has seen the Catalan side recapture their form, but Iniesta, like his coach Luis Enrique, was keen to play down his importance to the side.

"I don't think when I play everything is different," he is quoted as saying by Marca. "If everyone [is fit] and in form, it's easier. But there are all sorts of games. There are good moments and bad moments in a season. The important thing is to have faith in the team and that will keep us in the fight for trophies."
