Police have charged Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder Mitch Nichols for the possession of an illicit substance, believed to be cocaine, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The 28-year-old, whose contract expires with the Wanderers at the end of this month, was allegedly stopped by police during a random drug sweep at Sydney's Casablanca nightclub on Saturday.

The paper says that "three small clear resealable plastic bags containing about 1.1 grams of a white powder" were confiscated by the police and Nichols was issued with a field court attendance notice.

The midfielder, who has won five caps for Australia, was one of eight players that WSW boss Tony Popovic released from the club last week after the Wanderers failed to make it out of the Asian Champions League group stage.

Nichols is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Friday June 9.
