Western Sydney Wanderers offer Scott McDonald a 'life-changing proposal'

Scott McDonald has reportedly been offered a "life-changing proposal" to join the Western Sydney Wanderers and spearhead their A-League and AFC Champions League campaigns.

The Daily Record reports the former Socceroo has been agonising over his future for the past week after meeting with Wanderers boss Tony Popovic, who is on the hunt for a line-leading striker to replace failed marquee Federico Piovaccari.

McDonald, 32, only signed a contract extension with Scottish club Motherwell earlier this month, but is said to have discussed the possibility of a release with coach Mark McGhee.

The deal could not go ahead unless Motherwell agree to tear up his contract.

McDonald has never played in the A-League and only featured a handful of times at domestic level in Australia, for his junior club Gippsland Falcons in the National Soccer League, before heading to Europe as a teenager.

Famously, he failed to score in his 26 caps for the Socceroos, but his club record in front of goal is strong -- last season, he scored 10 goals in 37 games for Motherwell, and across his career he roughly averages one goal every three games.

In recent years McDonald has also played in a more withdrawn midfield role, allowing him to set up opportunities for teammates.

He would neatly fit the bill for Western Sydney, who have struggled to find a consistent spearhead in attack throughout their short existence and need a durable presence up front with a heavy schedule of games to come over the next 12 months.

The Wanderers have lost significant firepower in the off-season with the departures of foundation player Mark Bridge, Romeo Castelen and Dario Vidosic.
