Atletico Madrid's Yannick Carrasco suffers injury, Diego Simeone risks ban

Yannick Carrasco is set to miss Atletico Madrid's Champions League semifinal first leg at Real Madrid after picking up a shoulder injury in Tuesday's 1-0 La Liga defeat against Villarreal, while coach Diego Simeone could receive a domestic touchline ban after remonstrating with an assistant referee at the end of the match.

Carrasco, 23, entered the pitch at the Vicente Calderon as a second-half substitute, before falling awkwardly in a challenge with Villarreal's Antonio Rukavina and being replaced after a few minutes of attempting to play on.

The Belgium international was taken to hospital after the game for tests, which confirmed that he had a sprain around his shoulder joint.

AS claims it will take two weeks to heal, which would rule Carrasco out of the first leg against Madrid on Tuesday and make him a doubt for the return game at the Vicente Calderon on May 10.

"The Belgian was X-rayed and the report provided by the club's medical services indicates that he suffers a grade I acromioclavicular joint sprain," an Atletico statement read.

Atletico captain Gabi, speaking to reporters before the test results were known, said his teammate had been in a lot of pain.

"It was very painful for him, he could hardly move his hand," Gabi said. "We wait on the tests, but it does not look good."

Atletico coach Simeone, meanwhile, could receive a touchline ban following an incident with the officials at the final whistle on Tuesday.

Simeone was upset that referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva blew the whistle with his team still hopeful of finding a late equaliser, and according to the official's match report, he then placed his hands on an assistant referee while remonstrating with him.

"Coach: Diego Pablo Simeone Gonzalez -- Once the game ended, he went up to my assistant referee No. 1, putting both hands on his shoulders from behind, remonstrating about the need to have added more time to the game," the report read.

Should Spain's Competition Committee decide to act then Simeone would at least be banned for Saturday's La Liga game at Las Palmas.

Atletico are currently in a battle with Sevilla for third place in La Liga and the final automatic Champions League qualifying spot, with the Andalusians having a chance to draw level on points should they win at home to Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Simeone previously received an eight-game ban after he tapped a match official on the back of the head after being sent off during a 2014 Spanish Super Cup game against Real Madrid.
