Arsene Wenger rules out Arsenal buying a goalkeeper in summer window

LONDON -- Arsene Wenger has ruled out buying a goalkeeper this summer, despite being impressed by Sunderland's Jordan Pickford during Arsenal's 2-0 win on Tuesday.

Pickford singlehandedly kept Arsenal at bay for much of the match, making 11 saves to frustrate the Gunners until Alexis Sanchez scored twice from close range in the 72nd and 81st minutes to end the visitors' resistance.

With Sunderland already relegated, Pickford has been linked to a number of Premier League clubs for next season, but Wenger said Arsenal are not among his suitors.

"We have plenty of goalkeepers. We have Petr Cech, [David] Ospina, we have Wojciech [Szczesny] who is on loan at Roma and had an exceptional season at Roma. We have Emi Martinez. If there's one thing we don't need to buy it's a goalkeeper," Wenger said.

"[Pickford] had an exceptional night. I think we had 36 shots on goal, which is the highest ever in the Premier League. And their keeper saved 11 of them, so he has done extremely well."

Sanchez once again proved the difference maker for Arsenal, taking his Premier League tally to 23 goals for the season. That's despite Wenger having to make a late decision on whether to even play the Chilean after he picked up a thigh injury at Stoke on Saturday.

Wenger said Sanchez was only cleared to play at 4 p.m., less than four hours before the game.

"But once he's on the pitch and gets the ball he becomes always a devil and forgets his pain," Wenger said. "Nobody questions his desire and his quality.

"But it shows as well if you look his numbers, he has developed here as a player and has become a top-class player. And has not wasted his time here. And hopefully that will last for a long time."
