Arsenal must beat rivals to have a chance at winning title - Ray Parlour

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour insists the Gunners can still win the Premier League this season, as long as they beat their main title rivals.

Second-placed Arsenal are eight points behind leaders Chelsea and travel to Stamford Bridge on Feb. 4 for a game that could have a big impact on the title race.

And Parlour, who won three league titles with the Gunners, said it is the clashes between the big teams that will end up deciding the who comes out on top.

"Arsenal are eight points behind Chelsea now, but Chelsea have got Liverpool coming up, they've got Arsenal coming up -- they win those two games or get good results in those two games then it's all over," Parlour told the Daily Mirror.

"But if Arsenal can win their big games then that's when you claw back the points in the title race. It will basically come down to those games when the teams at the top play each other because they are the big games that generally decide the title race."

Arsenal beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in September, but Antonio Conte's side went on a 13-game winning run in the league after that loss to secure a big lead at the top of the table.

The Gunners have not won at Stamford Bridge since 2011, and lost ground to Chelsea in December with consecutive losses at Everton and Manchester City.

But Parlour said Arsenal were able to overcome a similar slump to win the title in the 1997-98 season.

"A lot of teams have bad patches. We used to have a bad patch in November," he said. "Even in the '98 season we had a bad patch. It always seemed to be November, no idea why. But you can still come back from it."
