Diego Maradona questioned over Madrid hotel row with girlfriend

Spanish police have confirmed that they were called to a hotel in Madrid on Wednesday morning because of an argument between Diego Maradona and his girlfriend.

No charges were brought against either Maradona -- in the city to watch his old club Napoli in Champions League action against Real Madrid on Wednesday -- or his girlfriend.

A police spokesman told ESPN FC: "We received a call at 8.30 a.m. from the manager of the hotel, and the emergency services were also informed after an argument broke out between Diego Maradona and his girlfriend.

"The emergency services arrived but were not needed. Maradona and his girlfriend were questioned, but there were no signs of assault and neither Maradona nor his girlfriend wanted to press charges.

"The police and the emergency services left the premises."

Maradona later released a statement on his Facebook page playing down the incident.

"I want to inform that I am in Madrid enjoying my family, and waiting for Napoli to play in the Champions League," he wrote. "My lawyer Matias Morla contacted the Spanish authorities. There are no complaints and nobody was able to explain to me the reason for this media show. I'm having a great time, let them tell their stories..."

Marca had earlier reported that Maradona had been involved in a row with a Spanish journalist in his hotel on Tuesday.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has invited him to speak to the players in the dressing room before they take on Real.
