Alaves want Bilbao's San Mames to host Copa del Rey final vs. Barcelona

Alaves owner Josean Querejeta will ask the Spanish Football Federation for the San Mames stadium to host the Copa del Rey final.

The Basque outfit reached the Copa final for the first time in the club's 96-year history after eliminating Celta Vigo to set up a meeting with holders Barcelona on May 27.

Edgar Mendez's goal gave Vitoria-based club Alaves a 1-0 home triumph in Wednesday's semifinal return leg for a 1-0 aggregate win.

"We will ask [RFEF president Angel Maria] Villar for the game to be played at the San Mames stadium," Querejeta told Cadena Ser radio. "It would be perfect for our fans.

"It is the closest stadium for our fans to travel to and a lot of our supporters could go. It's a modern stadium and it's a reference in the Basque country."

The venue for the final has yet to be determined although Spanish media reported that Atletico's Vicente Calderon is favourite with the stadium set to close at the end of the season.

"The capacity of the Calderon stadium and San Mames is similar," Querejeta told Onda Cero radio. "But San Mames is more modern and it's closer for us [62 kilometres from Vitoria]."

The San Mames stadium, which replaced the old San Mames, opened in Sep. 2013 and is the home of Athletic Bilbao.

Bilbao has hosted just one Spanish Cup final and that was back in May 1921 when Athletic lifted the title with a 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.

"I believe Athletic fans would be thrilled to have a Basque team playing the final in San Mames," Querejeta said. "I don't think Athletic would pose any problems for the final to be played there."

However, with the San Mames the venue for a Guns N' Roses concert on May 30, organisers may be against hosting the Cup final three days earlier.

Barca, who have won the title a record 28 times and beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 on aggregate on Tuesday to reach the final for a fourth straight year, are reportedly keen to play the final at their Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique's side would reportedly be happy to play the final at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home of arch-rivals Real Madrid.

"Barca can play many finals but we don't," Querejeta said. "It would be important for us to facilitate things for our supporters.

"San Mames would be the best option for us."

Alaves, who gained promotion to La Liga in the 2015-16 campaign, have not played in a final since losing 5-4 to Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup final.
