Former Liverpool defender Mauricio Pellegrino named as Alaves manager

Former Liverpool defender and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino has been named head coach of La Liga new-boys Alaves.

The Argentinian replaces Jose Bordalas, who led the club to the Segunda Division title last season and had seen his contract automatically extended by 12 months following promotion.

Pellegrino leaves his role as head coach of Club Atletico Independiente in his home country after only a year in charge.

The 44-year-old made 13 appearances for Alaves between 2005 and 2006 before announcing his retirement as a player.

Pellegrino has signed a one-year deal with the Spanish club and will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
