Gianluigi Donnarumma made right choice with AC Milan stay - Montella

AC Milan boss Vincenzo Montella has welcomed the positive ending to the Gianluigi Donnarumma "soap opera" after the goalkeeper committed to a new contract at the San Siro.

After initially informing the Rossoneri via his agent Mino Raiola that he would not accept a new contract, Donnarumma signed a new deal until 2021.

He will therefore remain Montella's No. 1 next season, and the former Roma, Fiorentina and Sampdoria coach said after Tuesday's 4-0 friendly win over Lugano that the 18-year-old had made the right call.

"It's been a long soap opera but it was important we got this final result," Montella said. "He's totally one of our players now -- in fact, he is already a key player.

"I'm happy and I think this is the right choice for him. I don't know what I will say to him -- maybe I'll ask him why he never sat his exams."

Donnarumma appeared distracted while on duty for Italy's under-21s in Poland last month, where he faced fan protests, while he skipped his school-leaving exams to go on holiday to Ibiza with his girlfriend upon returning to Italy.

Now his future has been resolved, Montella says the club will get behind him to ensure he maintains the form he has shown over the last 18 months at Milan.

"Gigio is our child and now he will need our support," he said. "He needs to be even more relaxed and get even better."

Donnarumma has already played 68 times in Serie A since begin given his debut by Sinisa Mihajlovic in October 2015. He has been capped four times by Italy since becoming the youngest ever debutant goalkeeper for the Azzurri when he was 17.
